As the artist, I wanted to capture that quiet moment of connection, that spark of recognition when you encounter words that resonate deep within. "Thoughts of Maya" is more than just a portrait; it's a journey into the power of literature and the wisdom of our elders. I see this young woman, phone set aside, present and transported by Maya Angelou's words. Those powerful words seem to fill the room—I even had to capture some of them boldly on the back wall. It's a celebration of Black women, of life itself, and the strength we find in our shared stories, the legacy of voices like Maya Angelou's that illuminate our path. This piece is part of my ongoing "Everyday Black" series because these moments of quiet strength, these everyday acts of self-discovery, are the stories I want to tell. They are the heart of who we are.
